Session 1: Will we miss the office if it disappears?

Gianpiero Petriglieri, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour, INSEAD:“Who will miss the office if it disappears? If you see it as a place of comfort and imagination, you will probably miss it. If you feel as if it was a prison, a place that makes you feel invisible, you might be liberated when the office disappears.”

Gianpiero Petriglieri, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour, INSEAD:“A good office allows space for solitude and concentration, but also for moments of companionship and friction.”

Esther Perel, Psychotherapist & Host of Where Should We Begin? and How's Work?:“Workplaces are complex social ecosystems. Whether it is a hair salon, a doctor’s office or on a photoshoot: it always has expectations, hierarchy, power dynamics, kindness, the need to be seen......Everything that exists in human interaction comes together in the office.”

Esther Perel, Psychotherapist & Host of Where Should We Begin? and How's Work?:“Soft skills at the workplace are still often seen as feminine aspects, and these feminine skills have traditionally been idealized in principle but disregarded in reality.”

Esther Perel, Psychotherapist & Host of Where Should We Begin? and How's Work?:“In this moment, the gap of the soft skills has become clearer. There’s a focus on digitalization and we have technological aids that can keep things going, but if we don’t have the social abilities of the office and we decentralize everything through technology, what will happen to collaboration, trust, connection ...... and the human dimension? The small things - lunches that are a little bit longer, the gaze of a colleague during a meeting, a pat on the shoulder -, can they be decentralized as well? We can do our tasks outside of the office, but do we do about the relationships that coalesce around it?”

Gary Turnbull, Partner Studio SevilPeach:“Technology can keep things on track and make sure an office keeps on turning, but it lacks on other fields. You can talk about facts but the other aspects - emotions, thoughts, questions – are harder to get across, while human interactions are essential for effective working.”

Gianpiero Petriglieri, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour, INSEAD:“The office has never been about being productive, but about coming together. You need these specific workplace relationships - to co-workers, to your purpose, to a place - as a buffer to create a necessary distance.”

Gianpiero Petriglieri, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour, INSEAD:“We’ve been having this incredibly beautiful affair with work - you have to be passionate about your job, feel it under your skin - and now suddenly work moved in. And everytime you move in together, that transition is a little bit complicated. You can’t go home to take a break, since work is at home now. We are all readjusting to a new situation, to the hybridization of the personal and professional.”

Esther Perel, Psychotherapist & Host of Where Should We Begin? and How's Work?:“We don’t work from home, we’re working with home. We are the employee, lover, teacher, parent, child, colleague, ... all at the same time and in the same spot. Normally, we have different locations for all these different roles, going from one place to another to inhabit a different part of our identity. Right now it’s all bleeding together. What helps it to create routines, boundaries and rituals to differentiate and transition between all these roles.”

Gary Turnbull, Partner Studio SevilPeach:“We’ll head to a hybrid model with the benefits of homeworking, combined with the important social aspects of the office. The office will still have an important role to play, and people will still want to go in, but they will schedule their time differently. A day or two a week to see the team and work together, combined with days working from home.”

Esther Perel, Psychotherapist & Host of Where Should We Begin? and How's Work?:“For many people, the office is an equalizer. You don’t see the messy bed, the small space, the family living under one roof,  …… An office is not about the space itself, but has so many other psychological meanings. In essence, the people, the sense of belonging and the community are more important than the building, lighting or facilities of a space.”

Gianpiero Petriglieri, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour, INSEAD:“There is a pessimistic possibility that a polarisation in the working place could happen. Some people will have access to well-equipped offices that feel like a home while a large number of people will no longer have ground for their working roots. On an economic basis, the office might risk becoming another elite divider rather than an equalizer.”

Esther Perel, Psychotherapist & Host of Where Should We Begin? and How's Work?:“In many sectors, this pandemic has caused a fundamental cultural shift. As a mental health worker and service provider, it has profoundly changed how we work. It brings possibilities - you can meet and talk to people all over the work - but at the same time you can also no longer be in the same room with the people you’re working with. That is fundamentally going to change our understanding of the profession itself. Everyone who works with contact is challenged, and they can not as easily work in a hybrid way.”

Esther Perel, Psychotherapist & Host of Where Should We Begin? and How's Work?:“We are developing a new relationship to space, avoiding the stranger. But when you avoid the other, you also avoid chance encounters, happenstance, the mystery that is right next to you. That will deplete and depress people. It is the side of feeling alive and connected that we’re missing out of.”
